Boy or girl? It’s a big question on the minds of many couples, whether they’re planning to conceive their first child or already pregnant and awaiting the delivery of a new baby.

How to Choose a Baby’s Gender

It may surprise you to learn that you actually have some choice when it comes to whether your baby is a boy or girl. You can use natural methods, like timing your intercourse, to influence the gender of your baby – because sperm carrying the genes coding male and female babies survive for different lengths of time in the uterus, you can boost your chances of conceiving a girl by timing your intercourse a few days before ovulation.

If you get this just right, only the sperm carrying the genetic material for girls will still be alive when you ovulate, so in theory you should conceive a girl. Of course, this method is a little ‘hit and miss,’ and there is no equivalent method to move the odds in your favor if you want a boy.

However, if you really want to choose the gender of your future child, there’s a process called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis – PGD for short. PGD was developed as a way to screen embryos for IVF procedures, to make sure the embryos being implanted weren’t at risk of genetic diseases. A side effect of this screening process is that doctors can tell 100% what gender an embryo will be. This lets them only implant embryos of the gender the parents want.

Do You Want a Boy or a Girl?

Of course, neither gender is ‘better’ than the other and you’ll love your baby no matter what sex it is – but depending on the stage you’re at in life and the make-up of your existing family, you may prefer to have either a boy or a girl.

So what are the differences between raising each gender? Neither gender is ‘easy’ to raise, but each presents different problems. Boys tend to be more prone to physical accidents, for example, whereas girls are often more sensitive and need more emotional support as they grow up (which is not to say boys don’t – in either case you should aim to talk openly about emotions with your kids).

In the end, whether you want a girl or a boy may come down to what your family is made up of already. If you have several children of the same gender, having one of the opposite gender can add balance and keep your household in harmony.

A recently published article in the prestigious medical journal, Fertility and Sterility in 2011 (“Increase of success rate for women undergoing embryo transfer by transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation: a pospective randomized placebo-controlled study”) provided evidence that use of TENS (transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation) significantly increased the pregnancy rate associated with embryo transfer.

Acupuncture treatment has a long history in China, and there have been several studies in the medical literature that acupuncture improved the pregnancy rate in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). Acupuncture-like stimulation using acupressure was chosen for this study because it’s less invasive than acupuncture, and it’s easily applied by without special training. In the study of 309 patients discussed above, (less than 45 years of age) TENS increased the pregnancy rate from 29.3% to 42.7% to 50.0%. The increased success rate was seen when two treatments were carried out.

I consulted with Dr. Jun Xu of Riverside, CT, a well known acupuncturist, who suggested two acupoints that he felt would nourish the uterus, and aid in implantation. Based upon his recommendation we recently began to offer TENS treatment to our IVF gender selection patients. Simultaneous stimulation of the two acupoints both before and after embryo transfer resulted in an early twin pregnancy. This successful procedure was neither harmful nor dangerous to the woman or her embryos. Because of this, we will offer TENS to all patients to increase their pregnancy rate in an IVF cycle.

I’m available for any questions that you may have. Please feel free to contact me.

Baby gender is a big deal to expectant
parents. You may have your heart set on having the ‘perfect family’ you’ve
envisioned, with an equal number of boys and girls. Because some couples are
genetically inclined to produce babies of one gender or the other, achieving a
balance naturally can be quite hard to do. Let’s take a look at the technology
involved in predicting baby gender, when you can find out for sure the gender
of a fetus, and some scientific methods that allow parents to choose the gender
of a future child.

Can You Predict Gender?

There are many astrology books and other
fairly non-scientific methods out there for predicting the gender of a baby
before conception. So far, none of these have any credible backing from
science. Feel free to use astrology charts if you like, but don’t be surprised
if they’re not very accurate for predicting the gender of a baby.

Ultrasounds and Baby Gender

Once a baby has been conceived, an
ultrasound will be able to tell you the gender of the fetus long before it’s
actually born. Some parents prefer not to know, leaving the discovery of the
child’s gender as a surprise for the day of the birth. But if you simply can’t
wait, you’ll be able to find out the gender of your baby by ultrasound at about
20 weeks into the pregnancy – sometimes sooner. This method depends a little on
the posture of the baby – if arms or legs are in the way it can be hard to tell
if it’s a boy or a girl.

There are other methods for testing the
gender of a baby – even before the gender can be determined by ultrasound,
doctors can pick up on the presence of testosterone, which indicates the baby
is a boy. Testosterone usually starts being produced at around 7 weeks into the
pregnancy if the fetus is male.

Methods to Control Gender

Thanks to new technology, parents
conceiving through IVF can now select the gender of the new baby with 100%
accuracy. IVF allows doctors to pre-screen the genetics of eggs and sperm
before the embryo is implanted, allowing them to choose only sperm which will
produce the desired gender. This method is expensive but it’s the only
guaranteed way to choose a child’s gender.

The childbirth is the happiest
moments for any parents. Family planning is a challenging task. The entire family
especially the parents have hopes on having a baby of specific gender. Although
the theory says that the chances of having a baby boy or cute princess are
50/50, you might have come across families that have children of the same
gender. This is where the importance of gender
selection methods can be emphasized. With the revolution in science and
technology in medical it has become possible to select your would-be baby gender. These new techniques have
certainly eased the tension of many parents.

There are many innovative
techniques that have evolved over the years that help get the best odds to
achieve the desire gender. These techniques can also be used to prevent the
transmission of genetic diseases. The method can also protect your child from sex-linked
disease. There are many health centers that offer qualitative, safe and
effective options to determine the gender. The two majorly used Gender Selection Methods are invitro
fertilization and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, abbreviated as IVF/PGD and Ericsson.

The Ericsson method has helped
many families with gender selection
of their baby. It is successful technique that involves selecting of ‘X’ and
‘Y’ chromosomes to have the baby gender of your desire. IVF/PGD is the latest
and one of the most preferred methods by many doctors. It is a method that
involves modern technology in gender
selection. Vitro fertilization is involved in this kind of treatment. Eggs
from female ovary are removed and allowed to fertilize with male’s sperm
outside the woman’s womb. After the cell division takes place, the embryo of
the preferred gender is decided and transferred back into the female’s womb. It
has been observed that this technique has the highest success rates than other
methods.

One of the sole reasons for going
with the vitro fertilization is that it is immune to sex linked and gender based
diseases. Thus, opting for this method will ensure that your baby is free of any
complications and is healthy. The most common genetic hereditary disorder that
gets transmitted by normal pregnancy is hemophilia. Children suffering from it
suffer abnormalities in blood clotting if experienced breaking of blood
vessels. It is majorly caused to lack of fibrin formation. Male child are
mostly found suffering from hemophilic. It occurs when ‘X’ chromosome contains
an infected gene. Therefore, it’s essential that you save your child from
suffering such disorders by opting for IVF/PGD birth method.

When it comes to opting to these
innovative ways of gender selection
choosing the right method is of great importance. In order to take a wise
decision it is essential to gather proper information of these methods. Going
through reviews on sites and asking for references can help you make a wise
decision in selecting the appropriate method. There are many health centers that
you can approach to learn more about the various methods, they can help you decide
the right method for you. You can browse the net to find a reputed and
trustworthy medical expert to guide you through happiness.

Fertility is an issue which has been of huge importance to humanity since the beginning of our species. In the distant past fertility – or a lack of it – was often seen as the result of anything from luck to the alignment of the stars. In more recent centuries, the scientific understand of fertility has moved forward in leaps and bounds – but that doesn’t mean all natural methods for increasing fertility should be discarded. Let’s take a look at what a couple can do to achieve greater fertility, both through diet and everyday habits and through advanced technical procedures.

Natural Approaches to Fertility

There are dozens of methods that claim to help a woman become more fertile. These include massage techniques, special diets and the use of particular herbs, and of course supplements.

Beware that this is an industry full of well-meaning vendors whose products don’t really work. They may sincerely believe they work, but in many cases there is no statistical evidence to indicate a particular fertility booster really helps increase the chance of conception.

That said, there are natural methods for becoming more fertile that have been shown to have merit. The Sympto-Thermal method is one such practice which has some scientific backing. This method is based on carefully monitoring changes in the body, such as temperature, so a woman can know when she’s most likely to conceive.

Scientific Approaches to Fertility

There have been many advances in recent decades when it comes to helping couples get pregnant. In the past, infertile couples usually just had to face the fact that they would not be able to have children. These days, procedures like IVF have given otherwise infertile couples new hope.

IVF is a process which works by fertilizing an egg outside the body, and then implanting the embryo into the mother’s uterus.

While methods like IVF have been a blessing for many new parents, they aren’t without risks. The biggest risk with IVF is the possibility of multiple births, and there are conflicting studies which have called into question whether or not IVF contributes to the likelihood of birth defects. That said, many parents stuck in the infertility trap are willing to take what they see as reasonably small risks for the payoff of finally having a child to call their own.

Artificial insemination (also known as intrauterine insemination) is another scientific method which can be useful for couples in which the male is the one with fertility problems, or where a woman wishes to become pregnant on her own (using donated sperm).

Natural vs Scientific Baby Sex Selection

When it comes to baby sex selection, every
parent has a choice to make: focus on natural methods, or go with a more
certain (but often very expensive) scientific procedure? Let’s take a look at some
of your options and the pros and cons of the natural vs scientific debate.

Natural Methods of Baby Sex Selection

Natural methods include anything from
intercourse timing through to astrology. Not all natural methods are old wives’
tales though – although they don’t offer anywhere near as much control over
gender as technological procedures. Some natural methods – like those based on
astrology – have little, if any, solid evidence to back them up.

The most effective natural methods are
those based on intercourse timing, such as the O + 12 Method and the Shettles
Method. These methods are based on the life expectancies of sperm – sperm which
carry the genetic code for creating a girl live longer than those for creating
a boy. So the theory is that if you time intercourse just right in relation to
ovulation, you can make sure only the ‘girl’ sperm are still alive when
ovulation starts.

Of course, this method is a lot less useful
if you’re aiming to have a boy! Also there is a theory that eating a diet high
in sodium and potassium can increase the odds of conceiving a boy. There’s no
solid scientific evidence to back this claim at the moment.

Technological Methods of Baby Sex Selection

The major advantage of using technology in
sex selection is that it’s generally much, much more accurate in helping you
choose the gender than natural techniques are. On the downsides, scientific
procedures are much more expensive and often involve methods like in vitro
fertilization, which is a turn off for people interested in conceiving
naturally.

The most successful method of gender
selection is PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis). It’s effectively a way of
choosing the gender of the baby before an embryo is implanted via in vitro
fertilization. It’s the only way to know for sure you’ll be getting a boy or
girl, because the gender is known before the embryo is implanted. Other
scientific methods generally involve manipulating sperm count to favor the
chances of conception towards a boy or a girl, because it is the X or Y
chromosome carried by sperm which determines the gender of a baby.

The Quick Guide to Baby Gender Selection

Baby gender selection has become a much
more common and accepted practice in the past decade. As its popularity has
grown, so has the number of methods for achieving the desired gender. First,
let’s discuss the reasons for gender selection, then take a look at some of the more common methods, how they work, and which are thought to be the most effective.

Why Choose Your Baby’s Gender?

Parents have diverse reasons for wanting to
choose the gender of their baby. It may be because they already have a boy and
want a girl, or vice versa. It may be that they have multiple children of the
same gender already.
Baby Gender Selection Techniques

As already mentioned, there are multiple
techniques for slanting the gender of your future child one way or the other.
Not all methods are equally effective, and while some of the methods can give
close to 100% control of the baby’s gender, the costs between these methods
also vary a great deal.

PGD – this stands for Preimplantation
Genetic Diagnosis. This method gives the greatest level of control over the
gender of the baby – there’s no chance of getting the ‘wrong’ gender with this
method. However, it’s a method based on in vitro fertilization and it’s very expensive,
so it may not appeal to parents looking to conceive in a more natural way.

The Microsort Process – this method is
based on sorting sperm based in the genetic material they carry (since it’s the
sperm which determines the gender of the baby). It’s less successful than PGD,
having roughly a 90% success rate for people trying to conceive a girl and
around 80% for boys. Statistics show it’s more successful when carried out
through in vitro fertilization as opposed to the alternative, intrauterine insemination.
Shettles Method – this is a method of
gender selection which does not involve in vitro or intrauterine insemination –
conception is achieved ‘the old fashioned way.’ The method is based on timing
intercourse relative to ovulation, because of the fact that sperm survive for
different time periods depending on the genetic material they carry related to
gender. In short, sperm that code for boys die faster than sperm that code for
girls. Because there is an element of guesswork involved with this method, it’s
relatively ‘hit and miss.’

This is just a glance at the methods you
can use for gender selection. There are a wide variety of other natural and
scientific methods which include special diets, astrology charts, and the
Ericsson Method (which is similar to Microsort, but cheaper).

IVF and PGD are terms that go hand in hand – but why, and what do they really mean? IVF stands for in vitro fertilization. It’s a type of artificial impregnation method for couples who find it hard to conceive through natural means (and it has also now become a popular way for gay couples to have children). PGD stands for preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which is the only 100% successful method for selecting the gender of a baby. Let’s look more closely at exactly how IVF and PGD work, and why they’re so closely related to each other.

How IVF Works

To really understand PGD, what it is and why it exists you first need to understand IVF. In vitro fertilization is simply a process where the egg is fertilized outside the mother’s body. It’s used in a number of scenarios, but generally it’s used by couples who can’t conceived naturally because of fertility problems with either the man or woman.

An IVF baby (otherwise known as a ‘test tube baby’) can carry the genetic material of one parent, both parents or neither of the parents. If the mother is infertile, for existence, the embryo can be created by fertilizing a donated egg with sperm from the father.

The process itself is complex and expensive and typically requires a series of fertility drugs be taken by the mother-to-be.

IVF shouldn’t be viewed as a guaranteed procedure – in fact the pregnancy rate for women under the age of 35 is less than 50%. The likelihood of a successful implant declines the older the mother is.

How PGD Works

PGD was originally developed to allow doctors to screen an embryo for genetic problems before it was implanted into the mother’s womb via IVF. This was to help ensure mothers weren’t implanted with embryos that already carried the genetic code for disorders such as Down syndrome, anemia, or any number of other genetically inherited health problems. Basically, it was a method for helping both parent and potential child avoid a lifetime of struggle.

Of course, the ability to pre-screen for genetic disorders brought with it the ability to see which gender the embryo would develop into. Because gender is determined by the mix of X and Y chromosomes in the embryo, a doctor can figure out what gender the baby will be before the embryo is implanted. That’s why PGD is guaranteed to get the desired gender outcome every time.
